The Retiree Connection Web site is being redesigned and renamed the Retiree and Survivor Connection. Senator Johnny Isakson (R., Ga.) and Delta’s Rob Kight, vice president – Compensation and Benefit Services, have issued responses to the June 27 Wall Street Journal editorial, Pension crash Landing. The WSJ editorial described pension reform legislation being conferred in Congress as, “another pension fix that would give airlines one more reprieve and make taxpayers even more vulnerable.” Not so said Isakson and Kight.

 

Grassroots advocacy by Delta employees and retirees has been crucial to moving pension reform through the legislative process. In fact, since July of 2005, Delta people have sent over 34,000 messages to Congress explaining the importance of extending defined-benefit pension plan funding requirements for airlines. Now, it is time to reaffirm our support for completion and let Congress know that further delay puts airline plans at risk.

Employment Verification, a recent enhancement to Employee Self-Service, allows inactive employees, retirees, and other former employees to submit verification requests for loans, leases and other personal transactions. This on-line, free service replaces the previous method. Users can request that employment information only or employment information with salary details be sent to their designated recipient. Both fax and U.S. mail options are available. More

A letter signed by 115 members of the US House of Representatives was forwarded March 13 to the chairman and ranking members of the House-Senate Conference on pension reform, encouraging the conference committee to accept the airline funding rule from the Senate version of the legislation. More

Nonrevenue travelers may begin paying the annual $50 pass activation fee via credit card or debit card on TravelNet effective today. The fee is effective for pass anniversary dates April 1 and beyond and is due on or before the Primary Pass Rider anniversary date.  Employees with a pass anniversary date prior to April 1 will not be required to pay the activation fee until their next pass anniversary date.

Letter Seeking Pilot Retirees to Serve as Members on a Section 1114 Committee
At a hearing on February 6, 2006, the Court directed the appointment of a pilot retiree committee under 11 U.S.C. § 1114 in these cases. The Court further requested that the United States Trustee’s office assist in the appointment of a committee.

In a recent newspaper advertisement, a group of retired Delta employees claimed that the company has improperly funded certified-time and severance benefits from the Delta Family-Care Disability and Survivorship Trust (the “Trust”).  We strongly disagree with these charges, and believe that it was – and is – entirely legal and proper to fund these important employee benefits from the Trust.  The matter is pending before the Bankruptcy Court and will be resolved through the judicial process.

Delta responds to open letter on D&S Trust    

Today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution includes a full-page advertisement from the Delta Air Lines Retirement Committee (DALRC) titled: An Open Letter to the Leaders of Delta Air Lines to Stop Their Improper Withdrawals from the Delta Disability and Survivorship Trust.

Despite the severity of its financial situation, Delta has made no proposals to change or reduce any long-term disability, survivorship or life insurance benefits under the Disability and Survivorship (D&S) Plan. Furthermore, not a single nickel of the D&S Trust has been used for executive severance. The company is working hard to become financially healthy so that it can generate the resources necessary to survive and to continue to provide benefits to its employees, including its disabled active and retired employees and their survivors, for generations to come.

Enhancements to TravelNet that will provide refund and reissue capabilities have been delayed until the end of January. TravelNet will continue its standard functions until then for booking nonrevenue and positive-space travel.

ESOP Preferred Stock Distribution Available
Participants may take in-kind distributions of the Delta preferred stock in their Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) accounts due to a plan change approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Dec. 19, 2005. The program provides access to the remaining value of ESOP preferred stock, which was previously frozen under the Chapter 11 rules. It also may provide restoration payments if funds are available after certain other obligations are met. (more)

Retiree Committee Provides Updates, Requests Addresses

A recent mailing to home addresses of retirees and survivors provides information about and from the Non-Pilot Retiree Committee established by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The committee has requested retiree and survivor names and addresses from Delta in order to correspond directly with them. Anyone who objects to giving the committee their name and address should tell Delta by Jan. 20. Instructions are provided in the mailing, which is also available here. (more)

2006 Medical Benefits Changes Announced

Delta is announcing some small changes to the previously announced Delta Family-Care Medical Plan for 2006. These changes apply to the 2006 Standard Medical and Out-of-Area Options and are effective Jan.1, 2006. Out-of-pocket maximums will remain at 2005 levels - $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families. Four prescription drugs - Celebrex, Nexium, Mobic and Zyrtec – will be adjusted to lower tiers. Hearing Delayed on Disability and Survivorship Trust
The retiree committee established by the Bankruptcy Court filed a motion Dec. 5 asserting that Delta failed to comply with the requirements of the Disability and Survivorship Trust for ground and flight attendant employees. Delta strongly disagrees with the committee’s assertions and we have submitted our opposing papers to the Court. (more)

New phone number for HR questions related to Chapter 11  
Starting today, Delta employees, retirees, survivors and employees of Delta subsidiaries can contact the Employee Service Center at 1-800- MY DELTA for assistance with human resources questions related to Delta’s Chapter 11 filing. The employee hotline number that was established on Sept 14 will be discontinued on Dec 15.

Facts: Delta Family-Care Disability & Survivorship Plan
On December 5, the court appointed committee representing Delta’s retirees filed a motion with the court asserting that the Delta Family-Care Disability and Survivorship Trust improperly paid for benefits other than under the Delta Family-Care Disability and Survivorship Plan (the "D&S Plan"). Delta disagrees with the filing and its accompanying press release. Delta believes that it has acted properly and that the position the committee has taken is not correct. Delta is preparing a response to the Retiree Committee motion that will be filed with the bankruptcy court. (more)

Contact Representatives on Pension Reform 12/6/2005
Employees are asked to contact their Congressional Representatives to ask their support of pension reform during December. With the Senate version passed, comprehensive pension reform moves to the U.S. House of Representatives where the related bill (H.R. 2830) does not include an airline-specific provision. (more)

Recent letters from UnitedHealthcare regarding flexible spending accounts (FSAs) were erroneously sent to some inactive employees who retired during 2005. FSAs are available only to participants on the active payroll. Retirees, survivors and inactive employees are not eligible to enroll in FSAs. UnitedHealthcare apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience caused by this error.

Be Prepared for ESS 08/05/05
Employee Self-Service (ESS), a new online self-service center scheduled to go live in August, is designed to increase convenience by bringing employee information to one website for easy access. ESS will give employees/retirees the ability to perform a variety of human resource (HR) transactions online, 24 hours a day/7 days a week. This system will provide greater availability to personal information critical to employees/retirees and their families. (more)

Family and Friends Pass Embargos 07/07/05

Delta is introducing embargo dates during busy travel periods for Family and Friends pass riders as part of a companywide commitment to improve customer service. Standby travel for Family and Friends pass riders will not be permitted on Nov. 23, 27 and 28; Dec. 23; and Jan. 2 for any Delta, Song or Delta Connection Carrier flight worldwide. (more)

Buddy pass deadline changes  05/12/05

The deadline for completing Family and Friends travel using tickets issued from a paper certificate and purchased before May 18 has been extended to Sept. 15 (not July 1, as originally stated). If travel is not completed by that date, the ticket must be refunded according to Delta refund policies.   (more)

TravelNet Enhancements for Family & Friends and Yield Fare 04/25/05

Delta employees, retirees and their eligible pass riders worldwide soon will enjoy even more flexibility as most Family & Friends (buddy pass) travel procedures will move online to TravelNet. Beginning May 18, Delta will eliminate the paper buddy pass certificates and replace them with eight new electronic authorizations for buddy pass travel accessible via TravelNet. Self-service electronic ticketing for both buddy pass and yield fare travel also will move online to TravelNet, meaning no more trips to the airport or a City Ticket Office to buy these tickets. Additionally, employees and retirees will be able to use a valid credit card other than their own to purchase tickets on TravelNet, provided they have the card owner’s permission and the exact billing address and expiration date for the credit card. Pension Bill Introduced to Senate   04/22/05

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.) introduced the Employee Pension Preservation Act of 2005 into the U.S. Senate on April 20. Legislation aimed at protecting employees’ retirement benefits is “a very sensible and pragmatic approach to the airline pension-funding crisis,” said Jerry Grinstein, chief executive officer. Delta continues to ask employees and retirees to help support this legislation. (more)

DL Lays Out TechOps Transformation Strategy

Delta will launch some strategic changes in TechOps based on a recent review of that division's ability to compete with carriers of all types.  The company will partner with two well-known and respected U.S. and Canadian-based suppliers for its heavy maintenance work, leading to an expected 34 percent cost reduction. TechOps also will begin shifting work from the Tampa, Fla., facility to Atlanta.  (more)

Delta Customers Offered Expanded Snack Service on More Flights
ATLANTA, March 9, 2005 – Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) customers will receive expanded snack selections on more flights beginning April 3, 2005.  As the airline transforms to provide customers with a more consistent travel experience, Delta will replace its current food program, including food for purchase available on select flights, with complimentary snack options in Economy Class on all flights of greater than 1½ hours within the 48 contiguous states, Canada, and certain Latin American and Caribbean destinations, excluding Delta Shuttle and Song.   (more)

Derickson Helped Airline Hostages
Ulrike (Uli) Derickson, the Delta flight attendant who was honored for saving passengers' lives in 1985 during the TWA hijacking, died Feb. 18 in her home in Tucson, Ariz. Derickson, 60, had been a Delta flight attendant since 1992.  (more)

DOT Denies China Route to Delta
The U.S. Department of Transportation today bypassed Delta as one of the new entrants into the U.S.-China air market, proposing instead the selection of Continental Airlines and American Airlines. For the three all-cargo flights, the DOT proposed Federal Express, Northwest Airlines, Polar Air Cargo and United Parcel Service.  (more)

DL Partner to Offer HR Service
Delta today has begun a seven-year partnership with Affiliated Computer Services for Human Resources support and payroll services. This new relationship with Affiliated is part of Delta's transformation plan to reduce costs and improve customer service. The agreement will result in a $40 million cost savings during the life of the contract. (more)

The Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame will induct former Delta executives T.P. "Pre" Ball, retired v.p.-Flight Ops, and Hollis Harris, former president and chief operating officer. Boston, L.A. Call Centers to Close
Reservation Sales is consolidating its U.S. operations, which will result in closing call centers in Boston and Los Angeles on Sept. 1. The move is part of Delta's transformation efforts to reduce costs, simplify processes and increase efficiencies.  (more)

Error on Paper Confirmation Guides
The Employee Service Center (ESC) has been advised that due to a data transmission problem retirees, inactives and survivors have received a printed confirmation guide with an error. These guides are used to confirm benefit elections made during the recent Annual Open Enrollment for the participant and their eligible dependents. (more)

All Active and Retired Employees Should Verify Payroll Info by December 15
As 2004 draws to a close, in addition to holiday gift buying lists, employees also need to double check the accuracy of the information in their payroll record. Incomplete or inaccurate payroll information can result in problems processing employees’ 2004 income tax forms.  (more)

U.S. Trust suspends sale of DL ESOP common stock
U.S. Trust, the independent fiduciary investment manager for two components of Delta’s Family Care Savings Plan, has suspended the sale of Delta common stock held in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). U.S. Trust said the decision was made “in light of the developments that have taken place over the past few weeks and the favorable response the market has had to these developments.” These include the contract agreement with Delta pilots and the additional cash commitments from American Express and GE Commercial Finance.    (more)

Buddy pass travel only on DL, Song and DL Connection in '05
Beginning Jan. 1, 2005, Delta and its SkyTeam and codeshare partner airlines have agreed to alter their respective buddy pass programs and allow travel only on the issuing carrier’s network. Delta Family & Friends guests will be permitted to fly on Delta, Song, Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA), Chautauqua, Comair and SkyWest flights only. Delta Buddy pass travel will not be permitted on either SkyTeam or other codeshare partner airlines.  (more)

As a result of last month's partial roof collapse in Terminal 2E at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Delta will prohibit Family & Friends travel to and from the French capital from July 12 to Aug. 31. This includes travel to and from CDG on Air France and all SkyTeam partners. (more)

DL Responds to Another AJC Article

In a June 8 Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial, the newspaper has distorted several issues, this time regarding cost cutting efforts at Delta. As the company did after the previous editorial was printed, Delta has responded in a letter to the AJC editor, signed by Ed Bastian, senior v.p.-Finance and Controller.  The company response highlights the fact that Delta has reduced nonpilot costs by 15%, despite considerable increases in fuel, pension, security and insurance costs; and the fact that the general administration costs to which the paper refers have already been reduced by 24%. In addition, pilot costs have actually risen by 25% during this same period, putting pilot costs at Delta nearly 70% above industry average. "No strategy or business plan can make up for this enormous gap," Bastian said in his response. Read a copy of DL's reply.
