Delta needs Senate pension support now
The pension reform bill H.R. 4, is slated to reach the floor of the U.S.
Senate this week for a vote and retirees are encouraged to call or
e-mail their Senators immediately requesting their support. This is
especially important for those in Ohio, Texas, New York, New Jersey,
Florida, and Alabama.
The bill was passed by the House very early Saturday morning by a
majority vote of 279 to 131. It now must make it through the Senate
exactly as passed by the House and without amendment before the Senate
adjourns for its August recess.

Conference committee reaches
agreement on pension reform
This afternoon, the U.S. House-Senate
conference committee came to agreement on pension funding reform
legislation. The compromise version includes an airline funding
provision that - based on our current understanding - Delta can support.
The legislation could move to the
House floor for a vote as early as tonight. The Senate most likely
will vote next week. In both cases, Delta needs the legislation to be
passed prior to the month-long Congressional recess in August.
Delta retirees can continue to voice
their support for swift passage of the bill through the
Pension Funding Reform site .

pension editorial
Senator Johnny
Isakson (R., Ga.) and Delta’s Rob Kight, vice president – Compensation
and Benefit Services, have issued responses to the June 27 Wall Street

taxpayers even more vulnerable.” Not so said Isakson and Kight.

Ask Congress to Finish Pension
Reform as soon as possible.
Grassroots
advocacy by Delta employees and retirees has been crucial to moving
pension reform through the legislative process. In fact, since July of
2005, Delta people have sent over 34,000 messages to Congress
explaining the importance of extending defined-benefit pension plan
funding requirements for airlines. Now, it is time to reaffirm our
support for completion and let Congress know that further delay puts
airline plans at risk.

insurance benefits under the Disability and Survivorship (D&S) Plan.
Furthermore, not a single nickel of the D&S Trust has been used for

Cargo, Traffic Hinder Nonrevs
Station staff in Buenos Aires report that cargo
loads for the rest of December are forecasted high. Nonrevenue travelers
and other pass riders, including those with buddy passes, should take
this into account when planning travel from Buenos Aires. More than 35
Delta nonrevenue passengers have been left in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
during the past several days because of heavy cargo loads. Flight 100
from Buenos Aires to Atlanta has shown ample seat availability, but
boardings have been restricted by cargo weight.
Similar situations may occur in other Latin
American destinations, including BogotĂ, Colombia; Cancun, Mexico; Lima,

DL Responds to Another AJC Article
In a June 8 Atlanta Journal-Constitution
editorial, the newspaper has distorted several issues, this time
regarding cost cutting efforts at Delta. As the company did after the
previous editorial was printed, Delta has responded in a letter to the
AJC editor, signed by Ed Bastian, senior v.p.-Finance and Controller.
The company response highlights the fact that Delta has reduced nonpilot
costs by 15%, despite considerable increases in fuel, pension, security
and insurance costs; and the fact that the general administration costs
to which the paper refers have already been reduced by 24%. In addition,
pilot costs have actually risen by 25% during this same period, putting
pilot costs at Delta nearly 70% above industry average. "No strategy or
business plan can make up for this enormous gap," Bastian said in his
response. Read a copy of

New
Medicare Information for 2004
When Medicare Is Primary for Your Spouse
The
Delta Family-Care Medical Plan will pay secondary (Medicare will pay first) for ANY
Medicare-eligible spouse enrolled in the plan, regardless of the age of the retiree. This
will affect all spouses enrolled in the Enhanced Medical option, Standard Medical option,
Out-of-Area Medical option and the High Value option. Previously, the plan paid primary
(the Delta plan paid first) for Medicare-eligible spouses of retirees under age 65. This
change should be kept in mind when a retiree is deciding whether to cover a spouse.
Premiums will continue to be based on the age of the Delta retiree; therefore, an
under-age-65 retiree who is covering a Medicare-eligible spouse will continue to pay the
under-age-65 medical premium for him/herself and his/her spouse. This change in how claims
are paid was made in order to implement a more standard coordination of benefits with
Medicare, resulting in a more efficient claims processing for retirees when Medicare is
primary. |
